Description

Copper is not a polite material. It does not sit quietly in a corner. It announces itself — warm, reddish, slightly industrial, slightly ancient — and then, over months and years, it begins its slow transformation into something even more interesting. This lamp starts as copper. It ends as history.

The hammering is not decorative. Every mark on the surface of this dome was made by a craftsman in a Marrakech workshop striking the metal with a rounded hammer to shape it from a flat sheet into a hemisphere. The irregular texture that results — no two sections identical, the surface catching light at slightly different angles across its curve — is the direct record of that process. You are not looking at a pattern applied to copper. You are looking at the copper itself, shaped by hand, showing every decision the craftsman made about where to strike next.

Solid copper, unlike plated or powder-coated alternatives, develops a genuine patina. In a kitchen, where steam and cooking oils are present, the surface will deepen quickly — rich amber tones within weeks, complex brown-red within months. In a dining room or living space, the change is slower and more subtle: a gradual darkening of the recesses, the high points staying brighter longer. Over years, in a humid environment, the faintest traces of verdigris — the blue-green of aged copper rooftops — may appear in the deepest hollows. This is not damage. It is the material expressing its age.

The patina on solid copper is one of the most dynamic in the world of materials. In the first weeks, the surface is bright and warm — a reddish-gold that catches every light source in the room. Over months, it deepens through amber and chestnut into a rich, complex brown. In bathrooms and kitchens, where steam and heat are present, the change accelerates. In dry living spaces, it proceeds more slowly and evenly. Either way, the lamp you have in five years will be more beautiful than the lamp you received.

Master artisan hand-forging brass in a Marrakech workshop

FROM OUR WORKSHOP

Crafted by Hand in Marrakech

Every Northgrove piece begins as raw solid brass, shaped by the hands of master artisans in the ancient medina of Marrakech. Using traditional techniques refined over centuries — hand-hammering, sand-casting, and meticulous finishing — our craftsmen transform raw material into functional works of art.

This is not mass production. Each piece carries the subtle marks of its maker — slight variations in texture, weight, and tone that distinguish handcrafted brass from factory-made alternatives. These are the details that make your home unique.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Everything You Need to Know

Can't find what you're looking for? Get in touch — our team typically responds within 24 hours.

What is unlacquered brass and how does it differ from lacquered?

Unlacquered brass is solid brass without a protective clear coat. Unlike lacquered brass, which maintains a uniform shine, unlacquered brass develops a natural patina over time — a living finish that deepens and evolves with use. This is the hallmark of authentic, high-quality brass hardware and is considered a feature, not a flaw.

How do I care for and clean my brass fixtures?

For everyday cleaning, simply wipe with a soft, dry cloth. To preserve the natural patina, avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners. If you prefer a brighter finish, a gentle polish with a mixture of lemon juice and baking soda will restore the original lustre. Over time, areas of frequent contact will naturally polish themselves while less-touched areas develop a rich, warm patina.

What are the lead times for made-to-order pieces?

Most pieces are handcrafted to order and require 1–2 weeks for production. Shipping typically takes an additional 5–10 business days depending on your location. We ship worldwide from our workshop in Marrakech. Expedited production may be available for select items — please contact us for details.

Do you offer custom sizes or finishes?

Yes. Because each piece is handcrafted individually, we can accommodate custom dimensions and finish preferences for most items. Custom orders may require additional lead time. Please reach out through our contact page or email us directly with your specifications for a quote.

What is your return and exchange policy?

We accept returns within 30 days of delivery for unused items in their original packaging. Because many pieces are made to order, we ask that you carefully review dimensions and specifications before ordering. If your item arrives damaged, we will replace it at no cost. Please see our full return policy for details.

Do you offer trade pricing for interior designers and architects?

Absolutely. Our Trade Program offers exclusive pricing, priority production, and dedicated support for interior designers, architects, and hospitality professionals. Visit our Trade Program page to learn more and apply. Approved members receive 15–20% off retail pricing on all orders.
